12 Days of Halloween: Scary Flash Fiction: Story 12 – Dead Bodies or Something Good To Eat

Hi,

Welcome to the 12 Days of Halloween Scary Story Countdown!  Everyday till Halloween I’ll publish another Two Minute Epic on this blog.  It wont be ‘Goosebumps’ scary, more just psychologically unsettling, at least to me.  This one is called Dead Bodies or Something Good To Eat.  Comments and criticisms always welcome!

One day Freedom died, alone in the attic apartment of an old house.  No one found Freedom for days, but people were finally attracted to the room by the smell.  “Smells like something good to eat,” said the people who found the body.

Once they realized Freedom died, they took the body to the morgue, so as to preserve the body for burial.  The mortician cut Freedom’s veins and drained the body of fluids, and right as she was about to fill Freedom with preservatives, Freedom spoke:  “Don’t do this.”

“I’m just doing my job,” said the mortician, so Freedom leapt from the table, tore open the mortician’s neck, and drank all her bodily fluids.  Then Freedom lay back down dead.

Again, the two bodies waited in the morgue for days until the smell attracted others who said, “Smells like something good to eat.”  Those people greedily ate the mortician, and seeing that Freedom was dead too, took the body so that Freedom could be buried next to Passion, Skepticism, and Imagination under manicured lawns in a gated cemetery.

No one came to the funeral, because no one was told Freedom died.  “They are happier not knowing,” it was said by those who knew.  The cemetery gravedigger quickly opened a grave, but just as he was about to lower the casket, Freedom spoke again:  “Don’t do this.”

“But if I leave you out,” said the gravedigger, “you’ll get eaten by birds and carrion, and you’ll rot and become nothing.”

So Freedom exploded from the casket, threw the gravedigger into the grave, and heaved dirt on top of him, burying the gravedigger alive.  Then Freedom lay down dead on a hill in the cemetery where birds and carrion ate its body and fed their babies.  The roots of a nearby tree sucked the juices out of Freedom’s veins and grew taller.

Everyday since, life in that cemetery grows more and more abundant, and the people of the nearby town spend more and more time and money to keep the cemetery lawn grass manicured.
